Ackerman-Hopper House

Early 18th-century Dutch colonial stone house — one of Bergen County's oldest surviving structures

The Ackerman-Hopper House at 652 Ackerman Avenue is a Dutch colonial stone farmhouse dating to the early 18th century, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bergen County has an unusually dense concentration of Dutch colonial stone houses — a legacy of the Dutch and Flemish settlers who farmed this region from the 1600s onwards — and the Ackerman-Hopper House is one of the better-preserved examples.

The low-pitched gambrel roof and the sandstone construction are characteristic of the Hudson Valley Dutch style that dominated Bergen County farmsteads for more than a century. It is a private structure and not open to the public, but visible from the street and worth a look for anyone interested in colonial American vernacular architecture.
