The Holgate Unit of Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge protects the wild southern tip of Long Beach Island, where beach, dunes, marsh, and ocean edge are managed first for birds and coastal habitat. It is the island at its least built-up and most exposed.
Access can be seasonal or restricted to protect nesting wildlife, so check refuge rules before setting out. When open, it is a superb walk for birders, beachcombers, and anyone who wants to see LBI beyond houses and summer crowds.
