Princeton University Art Museum

Encyclopedic university museum, free, with first-rank collections

The Princeton University Art Museum is one of the great university collections in the United States — about 113,000 objects spanning Chinese antiquity, classical Mediterranean, Renaissance Italy, and modern and contemporary American art. The collection is consistently better than the size of the museum would suggest; the Chinese painting holdings are particularly strong, and the European holdings include a Monet, a Cézanne, and a number of significant Old Masters.

A new building by Sir David Adjaye opened in 2025, replacing the previous museum that closed in 2021 for the rebuild. Admission has been kept free. Allow at least two hours; the cafe is good for a lunch break before tackling the second half.
