Drumthwacket is an 1835 Greek Revival house on Stockton Street, set well back from the road behind a long lawn and a colonnaded front portico. The estate has been the official residence of the Governor of New Jersey since 1981, although most governors have continued to live in their own homes — Drumthwacket is used mostly for state functions and as a museum house.
Public tours run on Wednesdays from October to May, by reservation. The interior is a careful restoration with period rooms reflecting the various nineteenth-century owners — the Olden, the Pyne, and the Stevens families — each of whom left a layer of history. The grounds are open to walk in during daylight hours; the formal Italianate garden at the rear is the highlight.
