McCarter Theatre Center

Tony Award-winning regional theatre with two stages and a strong season

McCarter is one of the country's most respected regional theatres — it won the 1994 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre — and runs a year-round season of plays, concerts, dance, and an annual production of A Christmas Carol that has been a regional fixture since 1980. The main theatre was built in 1930 with money raised by Princeton students for the Triangle Club; the smaller Berlind Theatre next door opened in 2003.

The programming reaches well beyond Broadway — premieres of new American plays, classical music recitals, world dance — and the proximity to Princeton means the audience usually arrives well prepared. A short walk from the train station; check what is on before deciding whether the trip out from New York makes sense as an evening trip.
