Atari Video Game Burial Site

A modest but historically significant spot at the Alamogordo municipal landfill, about 9 miles south of town on US-54. In 1983, Atari buried truckloads of unsold game cartridges here — including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the notoriously bad game often blamed for accelerating the 1983 video game crash. The burial was an urban legend for thirty years before a 2014 excavation confirmed it on camera.

A small plaque marks the excavation site. The landfill is still operational. This is firmly a pilgrimage destination for video game historians rather than a conventional tourist attraction — but for those who care, it's a genuine piece of pop culture archaeology.

A story
In September 1983, Atari crushed and buried an estimated 728,000 unsold game cartridges — including copies of the infamous E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial game, blamed for the video game crash of 1983 — at the Alamogordo city landfill. The burial was confirmed in 2014 when a documentary crew excavated the site and recovered around 1,300 cartridges, some of which sold at auction for hundreds of dollars each.
