A privately owned attraction on NM-53 south of San Rafael, where two volcanic features sit on adjacent properties. The Ice Cave is the collapsed end of a lava tube where year-round ice has built up to a depth of over 20 feet; a wooden staircase drops into a chilled grotto with a turquoise ice floor at the bottom.
The Bandera Volcano is a 750-foot cinder cone with a half-mile trail to the rim, looking down into a deep, partly-collapsed crater. Bandera last erupted around 8,000 years ago and produced the longest lava tube in North America. One fee covers both sites; allow two hours.
