La Ventana Natural Arch

One of New Mexico's largest sandstone arches

The free-standing sandstone arch sits in a rust-coloured cliff at the eastern edge of El Malpais, about 25 miles south of San Rafael on NM-117. The span is roughly 165 feet across and 125 feet high — large enough that the opening frames a full slice of sky and the bluffs beyond.

A short, easy footpath leads from the highway pullout into the alcove below the arch; the best light is mid-afternoon, when the sandstone glows orange-red. The location is part of the El Malpais National Conservation Area (BLM); free, with no facilities.
