Bosque del Apache is the strongest reason many travellers stop in Socorro. In winter, sandhill cranes and snow geese gather in huge numbers, lifting off at dawn and settling again at sunset over flooded fields and cottonwoods.
The refuge is also good outside peak crane season, with driving loops, walking trails, desert views, and plenty of smaller birds. Bring warm layers for winter sunrise; the best moments happen before the day feels comfortable.
