Fort Craig is a spare, exposed ruin south of Socorro. It guarded travel along the Rio Grande corridor and saw action during the Civil War campaign in New Mexico, but today the main impression is of distance, wind, and how harsh this posting must have felt.
There are no big restored buildings here. Go for the setting, the interpretive trail, and the way the ruins help explain why this stretch of river mattered.
