Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook

Award-winning pedestrian bridge over the Mohawk River

The Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook is a pedestrian-only bridge that links Riverlink Park on the north shore of the Mohawk River to the Bridge Street area on the south side. Designed by architect George Bain and opened in 2016, it is part bridge, part linear park: 500 feet of decking with seating, viewing platforms, an amphitheatre, raised planters, and bronze panels narrating the history of the Mohawk Valley.

It is the best place in Amsterdam to spend half an hour. The view east up the river toward the Adirondack foothills is particularly good at sunset. Free, open year-round.

A story
Amsterdam spent thirty years trying to figure out how to reconnect its downtown to the south bank of the Mohawk River after the construction of Route 5 cut the city in two. The answer, finished in 2016, was the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook — a 500-foot pedestrian bridge designed to be a destination rather than just a crossing, with overlooks, landscaped gardens, public art, and an amphitheatre for summer concerts. It won an American Council of Engineering Companies grand award and immediately became the most photographed structure in the city.
