Cattaraugus Creek runs through the hills below Ashford, carving deep valleys in the shale and sandstone of the Allegheny Plateau. When water levels are cooperative — typically spring and after heavy rain — the creek offers decent kayaking through wooded gorges, with several access points along County Route 75.
The creek is well-regarded for steelhead (rainbow trout) fishing in autumn and spring as the fish move up from Lake Erie. Access is free on state-owned stretches; get a current New York State fishing licence and check regulations before you go. The scenery along the creek valley is among the best in this part of western New York.
