The Recreation Park Carousel is one of the six antique carousels donated to the Binghamton area by shoe manufacturer George F. Johnson, who insisted that they remain free to ride. The horses are hand-carved, the pavilion is listed on the National Register, and the whole thing feels like a civic promise from another era.
Rod Serling rode here as a child, and the park is usually read as the model for the lost hometown in the Twilight Zone episode "Walking Distance." That connection gives the carousel a pull beyond nostalgia.
