Clear Comfort, the Alice Austen House, is a Gothic Revival cottage on the Staten Island waterfront at Rosebank with a sweeping view of New York Harbour and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Alice Austen (1866-1952) was a pioneering amateur photographer who documented New York street life and her own social circle with unusual directness over five decades. The museum and house are maintained by a non-profit and the archive of some 8,000 images is one of the most important social documentary photography collections in the United States.
