Chelsea

Gallery district and former industrial waterfront, now home to Chelsea Market and the High Line

Chelsea runs from 14th Street to 30th Street on Manhattan's west side, a former industrial and shipping district that became New York's contemporary art gallery centre starting in the 1990s, when dealers priced out of SoHo moved into the old warehouses west of Tenth Avenue. Several hundred galleries are still clustered along West 24th and 25th Streets, free to walk into and browse on any weekday.

Chelsea Market, in the former Nabisco factory on Ninth Avenue, anchors the neighbourhood's food scene — a dense indoor market hall of vendors that also happens to be where the original Oreo biscuit was developed. The High Line elevated park runs along the neighbourhood's western edge above 10th Avenue, an old elevated freight line turned into one of the city's best urban walks. The Rubin Museum and a handful of small theatres round out Chelsea's cultural offerings, and the neighbourhood's gay bar scene along Eighth Avenue remains one of the city's most established.
