DUMBO's art scene grew from the 1970s when artists occupied cheap industrial lofts beneath the two bridges. The neighbourhood now has a concentration of commercial galleries — many occupying the former warehouses on Water and Front Streets — alongside artist studios and public art. The DUMBO Arts Festival in September uses the streets, buildings and the park as exhibition spaces. The galley density is highest between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges.
