Gowanus Canal

The Gowanus Canal is a rough-edged industrial waterway between Carroll Gardens and Park Slope. It is famous for its pollution, but also for the way old warehouses, bridges, studios, and new apartment blocks crowd around the same narrow channel.

The most interesting stop is the Carroll Street Bridge, the oldest retractile bridge in the United States and one of the few left. Come for a short urban walk rather than a scenic waterfront escape.
