Plymouth Church

1847 Congregational church where Henry Ward Beecher preached against slavery — abolitionist landmark

Plymouth Church on Orange Street was the pulpit of Henry Ward Beecher, the most prominent abolitionist preacher in antebellum America. Abraham Lincoln attended services here; the church hosted "slave auctions" to raise money to buy the freedom of enslaved people. The congregation provided refuge on the Underground Railroad. The sanctuary is largely unchanged from the 1849 rebuilding and tours are available.
