Rockaway Beach is a seven-mile stretch of Atlantic Ocean shoreline on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, accessible by subway and ferry. It is the only beach within New York City where surfing is permitted and has a dedicated surf break at Beach 90th Street. The beach was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and subsequently rebuilt; it draws large crowds on summer weekends from across the city.
