Six Flags Great Escape

The Adirondacks' big amusement park, open Memorial Day to Halloween

Great Escape is the Adirondacks' big seasonal amusement park, opened in 1954 as Storytown USA and reborn as Six Flags Great Escape in 1996. About fifty rides spread across themed sections, the highlights being The Comet (a wooden coaster relocated from the demolished Crystal Beach park in Ontario in 1994), Steamin' Demon, the Sasquatch drop tower, and the Hurricane Harbor water park alongside.

The park runs from Memorial Day weekend through to a Halloween-themed October. Crowds are heaviest on summer weekends; mid-week visits and the autumn weekends are noticeably quieter. The connected Six Flags Lodge has indoor waterpark access for guests year-round.

A story
The original park, opened in 1954 as Storytown USA by Charles R. Wood, was a small fairy-tale-themed children's attraction. The Comet — the park's signature wooden coaster — was not built here but moved, in pieces, in 1994 from the closed Crystal Beach park on the Ontario shore of Lake Erie.
