Congress Park and Canfield Casino

Congress Park is the landscaped heart of downtown Saratoga Springs, a 17-acre green space dotted with mineral springs, fountains, and statuary. The Spirit of Life sculpture by Daniel Chester French — the same sculptor who made the Lincoln Memorial — stands in the reflecting pool at the center of the park. Several mineral springs are accessible within the park; the Congress Spring is the most famous.

The Canfield Casino at the park's edge is a grand Victorian building that once housed the most celebrated gambling rooms in America. It's now open as the Saratoga Springs History Museum, with exhibits on the city's gilded age and its tradition as a summer retreat for New York society. Admission is modest and the rooms are worth seeing even if the permanent exhibits are thin.

A story
The Canfield Casino opened in 1870 and became one of the most famous gambling establishments in America — a place where Vanderbilts, Whitneys, and Diamond Jim Brady came to lose money in elegant surroundings. Richard Canfield ran it from 1894 to 1907, when Saratoga's reform movement finally shut it down. The building now houses the Saratoga Springs History Museum.
