Petrified Sea Gardens

Just north of Saratoga Springs, the Petrified Sea Gardens preserves an outcropping of stromatolites — fossilized mounds created by ancient bacterial colonies some 500 million years ago. These lumpy formations on the exposed rock are among the oldest visible evidence of life anywhere on earth, and they're oddly compelling once you understand what you're looking at.

The site is small and low-key, more a curiosity than a full day's activity. It works well combined with a drive through the Adirondack foothills. Check ahead before visiting — opening hours are irregular and the site is privately operated.

A story
The stromatolites at Petrified Sea Gardens are about 500 million years old — among the earliest evidence of complex life on earth. They were formed by cyanobacteria colonies on the floor of the ancient Iapetus Ocean, long before the Adirondacks existed. The property was a tourist attraction in the 1920s and '30s and has been intermittently open to visitors since.
