Saratoga Spa State Park

A 2,800-acre state park built around the natural mineral springs that gave Saratoga its fame. The park is beautifully maintained, with a mix of open lawns, mature forest, formal gardens, and a collection of Beaux-Arts bathhouses from the 1930s that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Roosevelt Baths, still operating, offer mineral baths in the original facilities — an unexpectedly old-fashioned and pleasant experience. The park also contains the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), a major outdoor venue hosting the New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra each summer, plus major pop and rock acts. Entry to the park itself is free outside peak summer weekends.

A story
The mineral springs that made Saratoga famous are still flowing in the state park. At least a dozen public springs are accessible, each with slightly different mineral compositions — some carbonated, some sulfurous, some strongly iron-rich. Locals fill jugs; visitors drink from spigots and immediately regret underestimating the sulfur content of the wrong spring.
