Mashomack Preserve

Large Nature Conservancy preserve of tidal creeks, oak woods, marshes, fields, and bird habitat.

Mashomack Preserve covers roughly a third of Shelter Island, which is why the island still feels so green. Trails run through tidal creeks, mature oak woods, fields, and freshwater marshes, with good birdwatching and long quiet stretches. It is the strongest single reason to make Shelter Island more than a ferry shortcut between the forks.
