Stony Point Battlefield

Stony Point Battlefield preserves the rocky Hudson River headland where American forces captured a British position during the Revolutionary War. The site is small enough to understand on foot, with earthworks, markers, open lawns, and wide river views.

It is the one essential stop in town. The landscape explains the military logic immediately: a high point projecting into the Hudson, controlling movement along a river that both armies cared about deeply.

On the night of 15-16 July 1779, Brigadier General Anthony Wayne led a bayonet assault against the British works at Stony Point. The attack was brief, risky, and successful, giving the Continental Army a morale-boosting victory on the Hudson.
