The Lima Army Tank Plant, officially designated the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, is an active military production facility on the north side of Lima. Built in 1941 as part of the wartime industrial expansion, it is today the only plant in the United States that manufactures the M1 Abrams main battle tank.
The plant is not generally open to the public for tours, but it is a significant industrial landmark and visible from adjacent roads. It occasionally participates in community events and is a source of considerable local pride in a city that has built its identity around manufacturing. General Dynamics Land Systems operates the facility under contract with the Army. For visitors interested in American defence industry geography, Lima is one of a small number of places in the country where a significant weapons system is still in production.
