Blackhand Gorge

Sandstone gorge and state nature preserve east of Newark, with Licking River scenery and canal-era remnants.

Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve protects a narrow sandstone gorge cut by the Licking River east of Newark. It is one of the region's best outdoor stops, with cliffs, wooded slopes, river views, and traces of the transportation corridors that once threaded the gorge.

The main trail is unusually accessible for a nature preserve and follows the old rail alignment, making it useful for walkers and cyclists as well as hikers. Side paths get closer to the rock formations and quieter woods. Treat it as a half-day nature break from Newark, especially if you are pairing it with the area's earthworks and other historic sites.
