Steubenville Steelworkers Memorial

A larger-than-life bronze statue of a steelworker — hard hat, gloves, the tools of the trade — stands watch over the site of what was once one of the most productive steel-making stretches in America. Steubenville and the surrounding Ohio Valley were major steel producers from the late 19th century until the industry's collapse in the 1970s and 80s, when the mills closed and tens of thousands of jobs disappeared within a decade.

The memorial is direct and unsentimental, which suits the subject. The worker's posture is one of labour rather than triumph — a man doing a job, not a heroic pose. Behind the statue the Ohio River is visible, and if you know where to look you can still see the remnants of mill infrastructure along the bank. The memorial is downtown and free to visit at any time.
