Rogue Valley Wine Country

The Rogue Valley AVA surrounds Ashland, and the Applegate Valley sub-appellation to the west produces some of Oregon's most interesting wines outside the Willamette Valley. The long, hot summers and cool nights suit Bordeaux and Rhône varieties better than the cooler valleys to the north — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Viognier all show well here.

A cluster of tasting rooms operates within easy reach of downtown Ashland. Dana Campbell Vineyards and Belle Fiore Winery are both south of town on the way to the California border, with Belle Fiore's Italianate architecture set against the hillside in a way that looks more theatrical than accidental — appropriate enough for Ashland. The Applegate Valley is about 40 kilometres west via Medford, with a loose trail of small producers along the winding valley road.

Most tasting rooms are open Thursday through Sunday; call ahead off-season.
