Diamond Craters is a rough volcanic field where cones, craters, lava flows, and collapsed features break up the desert floor. It is not landscaped or softened much for visitors, which is exactly why it feels different from a roadside viewpoint.
Go prepared for dirt roads, sun, and little shade. The Bureau of Land Management route is best treated as a slow geology drive rather than a quick tick-box stop.
