Pete French Round Barn

Circular ranch barn from Oregon's cattle era, preserved in open desert country.

The Pete French Round Barn is a lonely, memorable piece of ranch architecture southeast of Burns. Built in the late nineteenth century, its circular form let horses be trained under cover through harsh weather, and it still looks perfectly suited to the open Harney Basin.

It is a short stop once you are there, but the drive is part of the experience. Combine it with Malheur National Wildlife Refuge or Diamond Craters for a full high-desert loop.
