McMenamins Grand Lodge

A 1922 Masonic retirement home turned into a sprawling hotel, brewery, restaurant, movie theatre, and soaking pool complex by the McMenamins, Oregon's eccentric pub-and-hotel chain. The grounds are large and rambling, the architecture is original, and the renovation is unmistakable McMenamins: bright murals on every wall, themed bars in unexpected corners, and a casual, lived-in feel.

The soaking pool is open to non-guests for a small fee. The Ironwork Grill and the Iron Work bar serve standard McMenamins fare -- burgers, hand-tossed pizzas, the house IPAs and ales -- and the rooms range from shared-bath dorm-style up to the more expensive themed suites. Even if you do not stay, an afternoon wandering the grounds with a beer is one of the better small-scale things to do in this part of Oregon.

A story
The Grand Lodge was built in 1922 as the Masonic and Eastern Star Home of Oregon, a retirement home for Masons and their families. The McMenamin brothers bought the abandoned property in 1999 and turned it into one of their characteristic restored hotels, with murals, a brewery, and a cinema, while preserving most of the original architecture.
