Fonthill Castle

Fonthill Castle is Henry Mercer's former home, a poured-concrete fantasy filled with tiles, books, and rooms that refuse to behave like ordinary rooms. It is one of the most personal house museums in Pennsylvania.

Tours are the way to see it properly. The building rewards anyone interested in craft, architecture, or the productive weirdness of people who had both money and very strong ideas.

A story
Fonthill was Henry Mercer's home, but it feels more like the inside of a restless imagination: concrete rooms, handmade tiles, built-in bookshelves, and stairways that seem to change direction on a whim. Mercer used the house as a showcase for his tiles as much as a place to live.
