The Saxonburg Festival of the Arts has been running on the Saturday after Labor Day since the early 1970s and is the one weekend a year when the town fills up. Main Street is closed off; some 150 craft and art booths set up the length of the street, a parade comes through in the morning, a 5K race starts at dawn, and the borough does its best impression of a much larger place.
The festival is genuinely a local affair rather than a tourist event — much of the food is church-cooked, the crafts are the work of regional makers, and the music is a mix of community bands. Worth timing a visit around if you are in western Pennsylvania in early September.
