Neyland Stadium

Neyland Stadium is the University of Tennessee's football coliseum and one of the defining facts about Knoxville. It seats over 102,000 people and on game days from September through November the city turns orange — literally, the Tennessee Volunteers' colour — and the noise is audible from kilometres away.

Even if you have no interest in American football, it is worth watching a game if you are in Knoxville on a Saturday in the season. The stadium sits on the Tennessee River, and fans arrive by boat along the river as well as on foot from downtown. The experience is less a sporting event than a regional cultural ritual. Tickets for popular games sell out well in advance, but visiting the campus and walking the river path on game day costs nothing.

A story
Neyland Stadium was built in 1921 with a capacity of 3,200. It has been expanded eleven times since and now holds over 102,000 people, making it the fifth-largest stadium in the world by capacity. On home game Saturdays in autumn, the population of Knoxville effectively doubles.
