CAF Airpower Museum

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airpower Museum at Midland International Air and Space Port houses an impressive collection of World War II aircraft, many of them still airworthy. The organisation's mission is to restore and fly vintage military aircraft as living history, and the museum reflects that ethos — these are working machines, not static exhibits.

The collection includes fighters, bombers, and training aircraft from both the American and German sides of the war. Guided tours explain the significance of specific aircraft and their operational history. During the CAF AiRSHOW each September, many of the aircraft fly in formation displays that draw crowds from across the region.

A story
The Commemorative Air Force was originally called the Confederate Air Force, founded in 1957 by a group of Texas pilots who bought a surplus P-51 Mustang for $1,500. They named themselves the Confederate Air Force as a joke — the idea being that they were the last holdouts flying these old warbirds. The name changed in 2002, but the mission of keeping flyable World War II aircraft in the air continues.
