Immortal Ten Bridge

The Immortal Ten Bridge carries Mays Street over the railroad tracks in the heart of old Round Rock. To most visitors it is simply a road bridge in the middle of the historic district, but a plaque on the railing marks it as a memorial to one of the more poignant disasters in Texas sports history — the 1927 train crash that killed ten members of the Baylor University basketball team.

The bridge sits at the southern edge of the old commercial district, just a short walk from the Round Rock Commercial Historic District. It is a quiet spot now, with the railroad below and the old limestone storefronts nearby, and the memorial plaque rewards those who take a moment to read it.

A story
On January 22, 1927, a passenger train struck a bus at this crossing, killing ten members of the Baylor University basketball team who were heading to Austin for a game. The tragedy prompted Texas to pass its first law requiring vehicles to stop at all railroad crossings, and a bronze plaque on the bridge commemorates the ten young men who died. The bridge was renamed in their honour.
