Round Rock Donuts

Round Rock Donuts is a local institution that has become genuinely famous beyond the city limits. The doughnuts here are large — called "Texas-sized" without irony — yeasted rounds that are fried to a deep, coppery gold and glazed or sugar-dusted. The orange doughnut in particular has cult status, with a faint citrus note in the dough that makes it different from anything else in the region.

The shop opens early and often sells out by mid-morning on weekends. The line moves quickly. Come hungry, bring cash, and don't expect much ambiance — the appeal is entirely in the product.

A story
Round Rock Donuts has been making the same yeasted orange doughnuts since 1926, and the recipe — a touch of orange flavouring in the dough, fried to a deep golden colour and dusted with cinnamon sugar — has barely changed. Texas Monthly named them among the best doughnuts in the state in 1976, and the shop has been attracting pilgrimages ever since.
