Downtown San Marcos gathers around the Hays County Courthouse, a compact square of bars, cafes, music rooms, vintage shops, and old commercial buildings. It is not polished in the way some Hill Country squares are, and that is part of the appeal.
Come after a swim, when the day cools and the student crowd starts to appear. The square is the easiest place to turn a river day into an evening.
