Waco Mammoth National Monument

National monument preserving an in-situ nursery herd of Columbian mammoths.

This is Waco's strongest surprise: a protected dig shelter where Columbian mammoth fossils remain in the ground where they were found. The site preserves the only known nursery herd of Columbian mammoths in North America, along with other Ice Age animals.

It is small, but the guided visit makes the science easy to grasp. Go for the bones, then stay a little longer for the quiet wooded setting along the Bosque River.
