Waco Suspension Bridge

Nineteenth-century Brazos River bridge that helped cattle drives cross Central Texas.

The Waco Suspension Bridge opened in 1870 as the first major bridge across the Brazos here, saving cattle drivers from a risky river crossing on the Chisholm Trail. It is pedestrian-only now, linking Indian Spring Park and Martin Luther King Jr. Park with a graceful sweep of cables and stone towers.

Come near sunset if you can. The bridge is an easy downtown walk, and the riverfront gives Waco its best sense of place.
