The Vilas Bridge is a graceful 1930 concrete arch carrying the road across the Connecticut River between Bellows Falls and North Walpole, New Hampshire. Two long arches span 635 feet from bank to bank. It has been closed to vehicles since 2009 for safety reasons but pedestrians are still welcome, and the walk across gives the best view of the falls and the gorge below.
There is a longstanding back-and-forth between Vermont and New Hampshire about who will pay to restore it; in the meantime it makes for an unusually peaceful interstate stroll.
