The most striking building in Montpelier, and one of the finest state capitols in New England. The golden dome — covered in real gold leaf — is visible from much of downtown and remains the defining image of the city. The building dates from 1859, though it incorporates granite columns from an earlier 1836 structure. Free guided tours run during the legislative session; the halls and chambers are open to visitors year-round.
