Chester Alan Arthur State Historic Site

Rural Fairfield site preserving the Vermont birthplace story of President Chester A. Arthur.

This state historic site sits east of St. Albans in Fairfield, where Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president of the United States, was born in 1829. The main structure is a 1950s reconstruction based on an old photograph of the family house, with a monument marking the traditional birthplace site.

It is a modest stop, but an interesting one if you like presidential history away from the usual big-city houses. The surrounding countryside also gives a good feel for rural Franklin County.
