Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge protects the river delta and wetlands where the Missisquoi River meets Lake Champlain north of St. Albans. It is one of the best nearby places for birds, quiet paddling, and a landscape that feels more like marsh and open water than Green Mountain village.
There are several public trails and boat launches, so you can make the visit as easy or as active as you like. Spring and autumn migration are the most rewarding times, but even a short walk gives the St. Albans area a wilder frame.
