Sentinel Rock State Park sits north of Westmore on the ridge above the lake, protecting a large glacial erratic — a boulder deposited by the retreating glacier at the end of the last ice age. The "sentinel" rock itself is dramatic: a massive chunk of granite perched on a hillside, visible from the road below.
The park is compact and quiet — a good stop for a short walk if you want a break from the bigger hikes on Pisgah and Hor. The surrounding forest is pleasant in autumn when the maples turn, and the park sees very few visitors even on busy summer weekends.
