Virginia Tech is the reason Blacksburg feels bigger than it is. The campus is built around the long green Drillfield, with Burruss Hall at one end and the Pylons and War Memorial Chapel on the other. The grey limestone used across the older buildings is known locally as Hokie Stone, and it gives the university a rugged, mountain-college look.
You do not need a formal tour to enjoy it. Walk from downtown across College Avenue, cross the Drillfield, and loop past the Pylons, Burruss Hall, Lane Stadium, and the older academic buildings. On autumn football weekends the mood changes completely, with tailgates, traffic, and orange-and-maroon shirts everywhere.
