Mount Hebron Cemetery on the east side of Old Town is a well-maintained Victorian cemetery that reflects Winchester's diverse religious and ethnic communities. It is divided into separate sections — German Lutheran, Episcopal, and Jewish — each with its own gatehouse and character, and the whole complex dates to the early 19th century, with the original gatehouse from 1844. The older sections have elaborate carved markers from the mid-19th century, while the more recent sections blend into standard American cemetery conventions.
The Stonewall Confederate Cemetery occupies one corner of the Mount Hebron grounds, and the contrast between the two — one formally organized by denomination and origin, the other gathered by a single military event — gives the place a layered quality unusual among historic cemeteries. For visitors interested in genealogy or local history, the cemetery is a significant resource; many of Winchester's founding families are buried here. The grounds are open daily during daylight hours and are worth an hour for anyone interested in the social history of the Shenandoah Valley.
