Crow with Fries

Crow with Fries is a bronze sculpture by Peter Reiquam, installed outside the Auburn library, depicting a large crow making off with a carton of french fries. It is exactly what the name suggests, and it is utterly charming. The sculpture has become one of Auburn's most photographed landmarks — which says something both about the quality of the piece and the sense of humour of whoever commissioned it.

Reiquam is a local Pacific Northwest sculptor known for his animal subjects, and the crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) is a fitting choice — crows are intelligent, omnipresent, and mildly larcenous presences in any Pacific Northwest city. The piece has a lightness and specificity that a lot of public art lacks.

A story
Peter Reiquam created the sculpture with the working title 'Food Chain' — the crow stealing fries from an oblivious child seemed to him a perfect encapsulation of the relationship between urban wildlife and human consumption in Pacific Northwest cities.
