Emerald Downs

Emerald Downs is the only thoroughbred horse racing track in Washington State, running a live racing season from mid-April through mid-September. The track seats around 5,000 and has the kind of atmosphere that makes horse racing interesting even if you've never placed a bet — the paddock area is accessible, the horses are visibly excellent athletes, and the Pacific Northwest setting with the Cascade foothills visible on clear days is picturesque.

The grandstand has multiple dining options, and the infield is used for community events and concerts when racing isn't running. General admission is inexpensive; premium areas cost more. The simulcast facility runs year-round, showing races from tracks across the country, for those who want to bet without the live season.

A story
Emerald Downs opened in 1996 on land that had been a Boeing aircraft assembly site — the underground drainage system the track uses to handle the notoriously wet Pacific Northwest weather was largely inherited from the industrial facility that preceded it.
